Operator Starsky, the well-known Ukrainian veteran, reservist, blogger, and co-founder of the Propaganda Study Institute, says that Russia is anxious to prove to others that it is a global leader. However, the recent BRICS meeting in Kazan, Russia, like Moscow's move to import North Korean troops, are signs that all is not well in the Kremlin.
Russia has continued to struggle with a lack of manpower. To cope with this, Russia is offering new military recruits tens of thousands of dollars to join the military. The catch? Most never make it back home alive.
Russians, knowing that the odds are against them surviving for long in the army, are reluctant to join, hence Moscow's initiative to attract more mercenaries from the developing world.
Dealing with a lack of able-bodied soldiers and internal economic problems, whilst winter approaches, things are likely to get only worse for Russia.
Vladimir Putin is facing a quagmire from which he has few means by which he can escape.
