Obituary: Democracy

Democracy, aged 2,500 years, passed away on July 1, 2024, following a prolonged period of ill health. Born in ancient Greece, Democracy was heralded as a pioneering system of governance that promised power to the people, by the people, and for the people. It inspired countless revolutions, declarations, and movements worldwide, advocating for the ideals of freedom, equality, and justice.
Throughout its life, Democracy experienced various transformations and challenges. It flourished in numerous forms, from the direct democracy of Athens to the representative democracies of modern nation-states. Despite its noble intentions, Democracy often found itself battling corruption, inequality, populism, and apathy.
The latter part of Democracy’s life was marked by increasing polarization, misinformation, and the erosion of trust in institutions. The rise of authoritarianism, coupled with the spread of digital disinformation and weakened civic engagement, accelerated its decline. On July 1, 2024, Democracy succumbed to these mounting pressures, leaving behind a complex legacy of achievements and shortcomings.
Democracy is survived by its ideals, which will continue to inspire future generations seeking a just and equitable society. Memorials will be held in city squares and public forums around the world, where mourners will reflect on its contributions and the lessons learned from its demise.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that citizens remain vigilant, engaged, and committed to upholding the principles that Democracy once championed.
