U.S. Support of Taiwan: The Way Forward

In 1979, President Jimmy Carter signed the Taiwan Relations Act, which requires the U.S. to assist the island nation with equipment and services necessary for its defense. The Obama years were characterized by intermittent and infrequent security assistance to Taiwan. The Trump administration, on the other hand, has announced plans for new arms sales to Taiwan and signed legislation encouraging bilateral official meetings, underscoring U.S. support for a strategically important democratic ally in the Western Pacific. On June 7, Hudson Institute will host a discussion examining growing hostility towards Taiwan, Beijing’s efforts to isolate its neighbor, and the ongoing arms build-up in the region. Conference participants will also examine the current administration’s record of support for Taiwan and offer practical ideas about how best to strengthen U.S. assistance to Taiwan. Panelists will include Hudson senior fellows Seth Cropsey and Arthur Herman, the Project 2049 Institute’s Ian Easton, and the Center for a New American Security’s Dr. Patrick Cronin.

Speakers

Seth Cropsey

Seth Cropsey is a senior fellow at Hudson Institute and the director of the Center for American Seapower. He has previously served in the Reagan and Bush administrations as Deputy Undersecretary of the Navy and acting assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations and Low-Intensity Conflict. Mr. Cropsey has also directed the International Broadcasting Bureau.

Ian Easton

Ian Easton is a research fellow at the Project 2049 Institute and an expert on Asian security affairs. Mr. Easton has previously worked at the Japan Institute for International Affairs, the Center for Naval Analyses, and the Foundation for Asia-Pacific Peace Studies. He is a fluent speaker of Mandarin Chinese and has lived and studied on the mainland and Taiwan.

Arthur Herman

Dr. Arthur Herman is an author, historian, and senior fellow at Hudson Institute. He has written nine books, including a Pulitzer prize finalist and How the Scots Invented the Modern World. Dr. Herman has taught at the University of the South, George Mason University, Georgetown University, and Catholic University.

Patrick Cronin

Dr. Patrick Cronin is the senior director for the Asia-Pacific Security Program at the Center for a New American Security. Dr. Cronin has held leadership positions at the Institute of International Strategic Studies, the Center for Strategic and International Studies, the United States Agency for International Development, and the United States Institute for Peace. In the academic world, Dr. Cronin has taught security and international studies at Georgetown, Johns Hopkins University, and the University of Virginia.
