Historical and sociological essays on the building-up of the Brazilian constitutional system, since the beginning of the 19th century up to the current constitutional chart, the 1988 Constitution of the Federative Republic of Brazil. The essays offer an analytical examination of the constitutional processes each time – the 1823 Constitutional Assembly and its liberal project; the 1824 first Constitution, introducing an innovation, the Moderator Power, besides the Executive, Legislative and Judiciary branches; the first, 1891, Republican Constitution; the new, corporative, 1934 Assembly and its "Weimarian" Constitution; the authoritarian 1937 Constitution, inaugurated at the Estado Novo; the liberal 1946 Constitution; the changes introduced by the military regime (1964-1985) and the 1967 Constitution; a new authoritarian turn in 1969; and, finally, the Constituent Assembly of 1987-1988 and the democratic Chart approved in 1988 - and discusses, more extensively the implications of each text for the external policy, as well over the economic framework of the current Constitution.
