Globalizing Latin America: New Approaches to the Nation State & Identity - Columbia University April 21. 2018

CFP: Stony Brook-Columbia Graduate Student Conference

The Latin American and Caribbean Studies Center (LACS) at Stony Brook University announces the 17th Annual Graduate Conference to be held at Columbia University on Saturday, April 21, 2018. The theme for this year,“Globalizing Latin America: New Approaches to the Nation State & Identity,” provides a space to graduate students and emerging scholars studying the history of Early and Modern Latin America within a global context.
This year’s keynote speaker will be Matthew Karush, professor of History at George Mason University. His research provides innovative approaches to popular culture and the history of Argentina from a global perspective. His latest book, Musicians in TransitArgentina and the Globalization of Popular Music, was published in 2017 by Duke University Press.
We welcome papers from a wide range of disciplines, subject areas, and time periods. Potential topics of inquiry may include, but are not limited to:
  • Popular culture
  • Medicine, Science and Technology
  • Commodities
  • Empire and Colonialism
  • Social history and revolutions
  • Art history
  • Diplomatic history
  • Intellectual history
  • Economic history
  • Construction of the Nation State
  • Identity, class, gender and race
  • Borderlands, migration and diaspora
