Lavrov’s latest performance is a classic piece of Kremlin theater: high on drama, low on facts, and dripping with irony.
Sergey Lavrov:
“Another very powerful factor destabilising the global situation is the expansion of the West on the Eurasian continent, which has been ongoing for several decades. This is occurring primarily in regions where Russia's influence has always been strong, and where our traditional, legitimate interests lie.
This obsessive ambition, so to speak, has in recent years openly erupted into the slogan of 'inflicting a strategic defeat on Russia.' An open war has been declared against us, with the Kyiv regime being used as a kind of arrowhead. But everyone knows that this arrowhead is helpless without the material support of Western weapons, Western intelligence data, satellite systems, military training, and much, much more.
The Kyiv regime and the Ukrainian state are being used openly as a geopolitical battering ram. Some candid fellows, I believe in the Belgian or German General Staff, have stated publicly: 'We are preparing for war with Russia, and Ukraine is helping us buy time.' Well, there you have it, as they say—there you have it."
If you’ve hear Sergey Lavrov’s comments, you’d be forgiven for thinking Russia is the victim of a global conspiracy rather than the country that actually launched a full-scale invasion of its neighbour.
Lavrov claims the West is "destabilising" Eurasia by expanding into Russia's "legitimate interests."
The reality check: NATO doesn't go door-to-door recruiting. Countries like Poland, Finland, and now Ukraine begged to join because they’ve lived next to Russia for centuries and know exactly what happens when you’re "within their interests”.
Lavrov calls it expansion; the rest of the world calls it sovereign countries choosing not to be invaded.
He describes Ukraine as a "geopolitical battering ram" and a "helpless arrowhead" for the West.
The reality check: This is the ultimate insult to the millions of Ukrainians fighting for their homes. Lavrov wants you to believe that Ukrainians are only fighting because Europe told them to. It’s a convenient way to ignore the fact that Russia’s own actions—the tanks, the missiles, the occupied cities—are the only reason Ukraine is fighting at all.
Lavrov says the West has declared "open war" to destroy Russia.
The reality check: No one is trying to march on Moscow. The "strategic defeat" the West talks about isn't the destruction of Russia. It’s the failure of Russia’s invasion. If Russia stops fighting today, the war ends. If Ukraine stops fighting today, Ukraine ends. Lavrov is trying to convince the Russian public that an existential threat exists to justify a war of choice.
He mocks Belgian and German generals for saying "Ukraine is buying us time.”
The reality check: When a neighbour starts burning down houses on your street, you’d be a fool not to check your smoke alarms. European generals are finally admitting their defenses were neglected. Saying "Ukraine is buying us time" isn't a confession of a secret plan to attack Russia—it’s a panicked admission that they need to get their act together because Russia has proven it’s willing to redraw borders by force.
Lavrov’s speech is a masterclass in DARVO (Deny, Attack, and Reverse Victim and Offender).
He’s pointing at the firefighters and calling them arsonists while he’s still holding the matches.
The "candid fellows" aren't the ones in the Belgian General Staff. They are the ones in the Kremlin who think they can still trick the world into believing the victim is the aggressor.
