Abstract:
China's growth is not the result of command. China’s political system remains authoritarian. Yet in important economic domains, its reform era enlarged the space for spontaneous coordination.

Dr. Zelmanovitz has been under employment of Liberty Fund Inc, an Educational Foundation established in Indianapolis, Indiana, U.S. since September 2001, first as a visiting scholar, next, as the manager of their publishing programs in Portuguese and Spanish, and since January 2006, as a fellow. In 2016 he became a Senior Fellow. In the Fall of 2023, he got a temporary position as a Research Associate of the Bush School of Business of the Catholic University of America teaching economics; and in the Spring of 2024 he became a part-time Lecturer on Economics and Finance at Hillsdale College. Since his first attendance to a Liberty Fund colloquium in 1990, Dr. Zelmanovitz has participated in different capacities in more than two hundred colloquia. Predominantly, the conferences he has put together are academic ones, on law, money, finances, corporate governance, urban issues, and Latin-American economic and political history. He has also managed the edition of dozens of books. Before that, Dr. Zelmanovitz was a businessman in Brazil, while also volunteering in the classical liberal movement. After a career in law, public service, lobby, real estate development, both as an entrepreneur and as an executive, his last activity in that capacity was at a financial company called Mercúrio D.T.V.M. S.A. specialized in raising capital in capital markets to fund real estate investments in Brazil. He founded the company in 1994, and was its CEO until the company was sold to another financial group in 2001. Dr. Zelmanovitz has a Law degree earned in 1982 from the Federal University in Porto Alegre, Brazil, a Master degree in Austrian Economics earned in January 2010 from the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos in Madrid, Spain, and a PhD in Economics earned in December 2011 from the same university. Dr. Zelmanovitz many academic articles and book chapters on monetary and capital theory may be found through Academia.edu and Researchgate.net. In 2016, Rowman & Littlefield, in the United States, published his book “The Ontology and Function of Money.” Union Editorial published a Spanish edition of that book in 2018 in Spain. Dr. Zelmanovitz’s second book, on “The Representational Theory of Capital” was published also by Rowman & Littlefield in 2021. Dr. Zelmanovitz was born in Brazil in 1961; he is married, and has a son and a daughter.
