Charles Landseer in Portugal and Brazil: exhibition and book

Charles Landseer (1799-1879) travelled to Brazil, via Lisbon, in 1825 as the official artist of the British diplomatic mission led by Sir Charles Stuart to negotiate recognition by Portugal of the newly independent Empire of Brazil.
More than half of his 300 or so drawings and watercolours of Lisbon and neighboring towns, the Azores, Rio de Janeiro, Recife and Olinda, Salvador, Vitória, Desterro (Florianópolis), Santos and São Paulo, which the Instituto Moreira Salles acquired at
auction in London in 1999, can be seen for the first time in an exhibition Charles Landseer. Desenhos e Aquarelas de Portugal e do Brasil, 1825-1826 at the Institute’s cultural center in Rio de Janeiro, 28 January -18 April 2010. The exhibition will travel to the Institute’s cultural centers in Poços de Caldas (MG) and São Paulo later in the year. The curator of the exhibition is Leslie Bethell, Senior Research Associate at the Centro de Pesquisa e Documentação de História Contemporânea do Brasil (CPDOC), Fundação Getulio Vargas, Rio de Janeiro and Senior Scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, Washington, D.C.
A book containing virtually all of Landseer’s work, with a bi-lingual introduction, has also been published: Leslie Bethell (ed.), Charles Landseer. Desenhos e Aquarelas de Portugal e do Brasil, 1825-1826 (São Paulo: Instituto Moreira Salles, 2010), 256 pp. ISBN 978-85-86707-49-0.
