Ukraine’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Andrii Melnyk, put the cost of Russia’s advance into stark numbers. This is from an earlier address to the UN.
No army since World War I, he said, has paid such an astronomical death toll for such negligible territorial gains.
According battlefield assessments cited by Melnyk, Russia is currently losing on average 254 soldiers for every square kilometer of Ukrainian territory it still manages to occupy.
During the Soviet Winter War against Finland in 1939–40, the cost in lives per square kilometer was roughly one hundred times lower.
The arithmetic is deliberately brutal.
Multiply the remaining contested ground by that rate and the projected cost of taking the rest of Donetsk alone rises into the range of another 1.5 million Russian dead.
That would more than double the losses already sustained and push the total past three million casualties.
Even for a leadership that appears to treat its own citizens’ lives as nearly worthless, such a figure is strategically catastrophic.
This is why the Kremlin has shifted toward pseudo-negotiation: to extract through pressure what the battlefield will not deliver at an acceptable price.
Extend the same rate to the entire territory of Ukraine and the number becomes almost unimaginable: over 122 million Russian soldiers.
The point is not that this scenario is realistic.
It is that the stated maximal objective is incompatible with any sustainable calculus of force.
Wars are decided by more than body counts.
But when the cost of each kilometer climbs this high, the aggressor’s theory of victory begins to collapse under its own weight.
Melnyk’s speech is a reminder that attrition cuts both ways — and that some ambitions are mathematically self-defeating.”
