Russia's war on Ukraine. 20.01.25

Operational situation

On the Kursk direction, Russian forces advanced on the eastern outskirts of Kurilovka, near Viktorovka, regrouped near Staraya and Novaya Sorochina, and attacked near Nikolaevo-Daryino and Viktorovka.

The “Siversk” Operational-Tactical Group (OTG) conducted reconnaissance near Mala Loknia and Viktorovka.

On the Kharkiv direction, Russian forces unsuccessfully advanced near Vovchansk.

On the Kupyansk direction, Russian forces attacked near Stroyivka, advanced north of Topoli, southwest of Stepova Novoselivka, and from Vyshneve to Zelenyi Hai. They attacked near Petropavlivka, Pishchane, Kolisnykivka, Zahryzove, Lozova, Nadiia, Pershotravneve, Kopanky, Novoyehorivka, and Novoserhiyivka.

On the Lyman direction, Russian forces advanced further west from Ivanivka and south of Terny, attacked near Novosadove, Novolyubivka, Kolodyazi, Zelena Dolyna, Zarichne, and the Serebriansk Forest.

Ukrainian Defense Forces conducted a successful counterattack.

On the Siversk direction, Russian forces unsuccessfully attacked near Verkhnokamianske and Ivano-Dariivka.

On the Kramatorsk direction, Ukrainian Defense Forces regained lost positions at the refractory materials plant in the center of Chasiv Yar and repelled assaults within the plant's territory.

Russian forces advanced along Tolstoy Street in Chasiv Yar, captured the "Novopivnichnyi" and "Desiatka" districts, and attacked near Predtechyne, Stupochky, and Bila Hora.

On the Toretsk direction, Ukrainian Defense Forces regained lost positions in southern Shcherbynivka.

Russian forces advanced north to the Toretsk mine area and northwest along Stepana Razina Street in the western part of the city, attacking near Dyliivka and Shcherbynivka.

On the Pokrovsk direction, Russian forces captured Kotlyne, but fighting continues in the northern part of the village. The enemy captured Mine No. 2 near Kotlyne, advanced and entrenched on the northern outskirts of Uspenivka, entered Novoandriivka, moved toward Sribne, and captured Vozdvyzhenka.

The enemy attacked near Pokrovsk, Zelenyi Polia, Baranivka, Tarasivka, Vodyane Druhe, Myroliubivka, Myrnohrad, Yelyzavetivka, Oleksandropil, Promin, Lysivka, Kotlyne, Zvirove, Udachne, Uspenivka, Nadiivka, Novotroitske, Zelenyi, and Shevchenkove. They carried out airstrikes with KAB bombs with UMPC near Kotlyne. Fighting continues on the western line of Novoukrainka–Lysivka–Sukhy Yar and for the heights near Zelenyi and Dachenske.

On the Novopavlivka direction, Russian forces slightly advanced southwest of Stari Terny and attacked near Slovyanka, Petropavlivka, Konstyantynopil, Andriivka, Dachne, Ulakly, and Yantarne.

Ukrainian Defense Forces counterattacked near Dachne and Zelenivka.

On the Vremivka direction, Russian forces made minor advances on the eastern outskirts of Velyka Novosilka and northeast of Velyka Novosilka, storming from positions in Shakhtarske toward Velyka Novosilka.

On the Prydniprovskyi direction, Ukrainian Defense Forces carried out a missile strike and destroyed a Nebo-SVU radar station in Kherson Oblast.

General conclusion:

  • Russian forces prioritize advancing on the Pokrovsk direction and attempt to exploit vulnerabilities in the defenses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine west of Pokrovsk.

  • Ukrainian Defense Forces have largely withdrawn from Toretsk but still hold positions in Krymske north of it and select positions on its western outskirts. The city is effectively occupied by the enemy. After grueling urban battles, the enemy's 3rd Combined Arms Army lacks reserves to continue the offensive.

  • Russian forces hold positions on the northern and eastern outskirts of Uspenivka. The pace of their advance in Uspenivka is similar to their progress near Nadiivka, Novoandriivka, and Sribne, as it takes them several days to capture small villages consisting of just two or three streets.

  • Russian forces attacking and slowly advance in the southern, eastern, and western parts of Velyka Novosilka, taking advantage of challenging weather conditions.

Change in the line of contact (LoC):

  • There were 189 combat engagements on various fronts.

  • On the Kharkiv direction, supported by aviation, the enemy attempted three times to breach Ukrainian defensive lines near Vovchansk.

  • On the Kupyansk direction, there were 13 enemy attacks. Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled assault actions near Stroyivka, Pishchane, Kolisnykivka, Zahryzove, Kutkivka, Nova Kruhlyakivka, and Lozova.

  • On the Lyman direction, the enemy attacked 17 times, attempting to break through defenses near Novoyehorivka, Nadiia, Novoserhiyivka, Pershotravneve, Zelenyi Hai, Makiivka, Novosadove, Zarichne, Kolodyazi, Zelena Dolyna, Terny, and in the Serebriansk Forest.

  • On the Siversk direction, the enemy carried out offensive actions in the areas of Ivano-Dariivka and Verkhnokamianske, with a total of 2 attacks repelled.

  • On the Kramatorsk direction, the occupiers attacked 7 times in the areas of Chasiv Yar and Bila Hora.

  • On the Toretsk direction, the enemy conducted 19 attacks near the settlements of Toretsk, Dyliivka, and Shcherbynivka.

  • On the Pokrovsk direction, Ukrainian Defense Forces stopped 89 enemy assault actions toward Zelene Pole, Oleksandropil, Vodyane Druhe, Yelyzavetivka, Myroliubivka, Promin, Lysivka, Myrnohrad, Pokrovsk, Zvirove, Shevchenko, Udachne, Uspenivka, Kotlyne, Nadiivka, Novotroitske, Novoandriivka, Slovyanka, Petropavlivka, Andriivka, Dachne, Ulakly, and Yantarne.

  • On the Novopavlivka direction, the enemy carried out 16 attacks in the directions of Konstyantynopil and Velyka Novosilka. Additionally, aviation was actively used.

  • On the Orikhiv direction, the occupation forces stormed the positions of the Ukrainian Defense Forces once in the area of Novoandriivka.

  • On the Prydniprovskyi direction, Ukrainian Defense Forces are making efforts to prevent the enemy from advancing deeper into Ukrainian territory, successfully repelling two enemy offensive actions

  • In the Black Sea-Azov naval operational area, the enemy naval group on combat duty consists of:

    • Mediterranean Sea: 6 ships, including 2 cruise missile carriers; the total salvo is 22 cruise missiles.

Supporting operation:

  • Ukrainian Defense Forces carried out airstrikes on the "Bryansknefteprodukt" oil depot, part of the "Rosneft" corporation, in the city of Klintsy, Bryansk Oblast; on the Gorbunov Kazan Aviation Plant, the sole producer of strategic bombers; and on the Kazan Helicopter Plant.

Possible operation situation developments:

  • The enemy command's plan for the Southwestern Theater of Military Operations during the winter campaign of 2025 may include an operation to capture Pokrovsk and the final occupation of Toretsk, Chasiv Yar, and Vovchansk. Another possible course of action could be the occupation of Kupyansk or simultaneous actions in several directions.

  • On the Kramatorsk direction, the "Khortytsia" OSG units will be forced to retreat to the Kostyantynivka area if the enemy reaches the Chervone–Stupochky line and simultaneously launches an offensive northward at the junction of its 41st and 51st Combined Arms Armies from the Novooleksandrivka–Arkhanhelske line, advancing to the Yablunivka–Oleksandro-Kalynove line on the Toretsk direction.

  • The enemy’s offensive on Pokrovsk may proceed according to two main scenarios:

    • A breakthrough to the city from the south and the gradual expulsion of Ukrainian Defense Forces from the city due to numerical superiority in forces and means (the enemy's tactics in Chasiv Yar).

    • A deep encirclement of Pokrovsk from the south, cutting the road to Mezhova, regrouping part of the 2nd Combined Arms Army's forces, encircling the city from the north as well, cutting the T0504 road to Kostyantynivka.

  • The 36th, 57th, and the 114th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigades, advancing from the south towards Sukhyi Yaly and Yantarne, might simultaneously, together with the actions of the 51st and 8th Combined Arms Armies, once again attempt to break through in the direction of Zelenivka – Ulakly and further towards Konstyantynopil.

  • Ukrainian Defense Forces will have to completely withdraw from the remnants of the Kurakhove bridgehead, engaging in fierce rear-guard battles, as the prospects of holding it worsen gradually with the enemy's steady advance in the zones of the 90th Tank Division and the 110th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade.
